The Krewe du Vieux parade features satirical adult themes and visuals. There are 17 subkrewes, each producing and parading a mule-pulled float through the French Quarter. The krewe was founded in 1986.
I began making costumes for subkrewe LEWD in 2016, and in 2017 I was named art director, in which I develop the concept, design the float, and consult on costumes and throws; I am also hired by individual members of the krewe to make their costumes.
In 2018 I began designing and producing the Royalty costumes, which has been a delightful opportunity to work closely with some of our city’s finest freaks.
I was very excited to work with Franziska Trautmann and Max Steitz of Glass Half Full, which is the only glass recycling available in New Orleans. Not only are they doing great work for our community, they also have playful styles and love colors. I went a little overboard on the Royalty Regalia this year but it was worth it! I also made a few pieces for the Captain and Vice Captain of KdV.
Due to the short Carnival season, I did not march this year.
Blues Legend Little Freddie King was our Monarch this year, with his manager Wacko serving as consort.
The LEWD float was called “Landryland”.
Isaac and Amanda Toups were our royalty this year, in recognition of their “Family Meal” program providing free lunches to low-income children during the summer time after our twerp of a governor declined federal funding to extend the public school lunch program. Together they run Toups Meatery, and Chef Isaac also appeared on “Top Chef” TV show.
I did not march this year or work on the LEWD float.
In honor of our queen Jan Ramsey (publisher of OffBeat Magazine), the main parade theme was “Krewe du Vieux Beats Off”.
In honor of our city’s new Sheriff, Susan Hutson, my subkrewe’s float was “Ho Down at the LEWD Ranch”. Yeehaw!
This year the motherkrewe theme was “Vaxxed and Confused” and our city’s health director, Dr. Jennifer Avegno, served as our queen.
LEWD’s float was called “Wasted Management: It’s Trash Day Somewhere!” and was inspired by the ongoing garbage woes exasperated by Hurricane Ida, including a dead alligator found in a pink dumpster. My costume was made from trash or other free materials.

The theme of Krewe du Vieux 2020 was “Erectile Disfunction”. Local do-gooder B.B. St. Roman served as our gracious queen, and even lent a hand working on her own float! As always, it was an honor to design and construct the garments for this year’s Royalty and her Consort, the painter Adrian Fulton. We rolled on 8 February 2020.
My Subkrewe LEWD voted in “Vaginal Avengers Gone Anal” as our theme and costumed as superheroes. I was Squirt, and I pumped out over a gallon of hand sanitizer (before the pandemic!). Once we got to the ball I surreptitiously switched to lube.
